I WORKSHOP OF APPLIED GEOPHYSICS

Geophysics is a set of techniques and methodologies employed to study (detect, locate and delineate), indirectly, bodies and/or subsurface geological structures in, e.g., in depth. To achieve this goal, the Geophysics professional (geophysicist) works with physical quantities such as the gravitational field, magnetic field, electromagnetic field, elastic field, heat, ... Various geological bodies (water and oil reservoirs, minerals, ...) as well as structures and phenomena of human nature (landfills, leaks, ...) can cause anomalies in more than one physical parameter. These anomalies appear as abnormal variations of physical quantities obtained by field instrumentation. Based on these profiles measures, the Geophysicist can infer the presence of these bodies and/or anomalous structures.

Given its wide applicability, the Geophysics has become a fundamental tool for environmental studies, mineral prospecting, petroleum and water; forensic research, archaeology, geology, among others.

By the 17th and 21st October 2011, the Earth Sciences program of UFOPA, in partnership with the graduate program in Geophysics UFPA, will perform the first Workshop of applied Geophysics, where it will be shown a series of geological models and geophysical experiments (in reduced scale). There will be also a videos displaying and informative panels about what is geophysics. We will also have a Brazilian Geophysical Society stand.
